I am by no means a pro couponer but I AM a pro at frugal shopping/living so when I was introduced to the oh so wonderful coupon world it was love at first buy. So... without further ado,

HOW TO COUPON SHOP:
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">1. Get the coupons
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> a. Sunday papers
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> i. General rule of thumb is 1 sunday paper for every 1 person in your household. Your local paper usually have a bargain for getting multiple sunday papers. You can also just buy them at gas stations and such but the coupons are not always guaranteed to be in there thanks to "coupon thieves" as I like to call them.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">But when you are buying 5-6 + papers a week x 4 a month it's usually cheaper to get a subscription. Call your local paper for deals.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> b. Printables (found via grocery smarts and other sites like the ones listed above)
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> c. Peelies- found on or inside the box

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">2. Organize coupons
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> Idea 1
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Idea 2<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> Idea 3
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Idea 4
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">3. Combine coupons with sales and... SHOP! This is where Grocerysmarts and all those other lovely sites (i've listed my fav's below) comes in.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Here is a video explaining coupon shopping.
NOTE* when she talks about the "catalina" adds substitute "Albertsons". Our local Albertsons does the same thing.

So basically in a tiny nut-shell--- You save your coupons until that item goes on sale.. You check the sales from grocerysmarts and all those other lovely sites/blogs... then you make a shopping list BASED on those sales... take them to the grocery store, shop, and then hand the cashier a lovely stack of coupons and watch your total go from $$$ to $. It's that easy!!! (not really, I spend hours planning but we save so much it really is like a PT job)

EXTRAS
Coupon Lingo - <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">What language are they speaking?!?! WYB, MIR, RR,.... and all those other tricky codes are deciphered here

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Here are links to my favorite Coupon sites. I refer to these weekly/daily as THEY keep an eye on the sales so I don't have to!
Big man is almost done with the semester and couldnt be happier
Little E is reading on a 1st grade level... she is such a go getter! She also has an infection on the bottom of her foot which we think she got from a sliver or perhaps tiny piece of glass that we never knew about. We didnt know about it til she started walking funny with her foot sideways and when I told her to show me her foot it was all sorts of disguisting! Ill spare you the gory details. anyway.. I'm curing it with my "hippy stuff"
(cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide, putting X-ceptic on which is an awesome antivirus/bacterial blend, frankensence oil, and then comfrey salve... 3-4 times a day) <---- for those of you who were curious
After only 3 days it is looking AMAZING!!! I just started keeping track with pictures today. it will be exciting to see the healing progress as "proof" of all my hippy magic :)
Little H is in Joyschool, and yes that is different than preschool. If she could she would LIVE there. She LOVES it!!! she also cut her hair again, for the umpteenth time! someday i'll laugh about it i'm sure but for now it's just annoying
Little man is walking!! in fact, he has mastered that so now he has moved onto running everywhere he can and trying to spin in circles while laughing hysterically at himself. He is such a hoot to have around! And much to Big Man's delight... he LOVES starwars! everytime he sees anything starwars he gets all sorts of excited.
I am playing mom... same old same old. homeschooling, teaching, learning, crafting, NOT BEING PREGNANT OR NURSING!!! it's great!
looking forward to the holidays!! our tree is up... and has already tipped over once :) thanks to my little crewAdam+Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06776755195605406502noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639553862971424100.post-11992799441137397822009-11-19T10:11:00.000-08:002009-11-19T10:11:41.603-08:00WWW SPOTLIGHTAs most of you know... I homeschool my kids. I don't know if I always will, as there is a charter school in the area that I would LOVE for them to attend (and they are on the waiting list) but for now, and because my kids will NEVER attend public school... I homeschool.

I have a netfriend who has a great blog

dedicated to this and she has decided to put her Masters in Education Technology to good use by changing her blog into how to teach our kids in a technological way in our ever increasing techno world. She has and AMAZING knowledge on this subject and has tons of great ideas in store. Those of you who homeschool, are thinking about homeschooling, or those of you who realize that YOU are your child's greatest teacher no matter where they go to school should check out her site and USE her info in your FHE or even everyday life.

IT IS AMAZING!!! to quote her:

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">"I love it because when they use the browser, they can't go clicking all over the internet and don't have access to my desktop. It also lets them find the websites they like without putting an address in the address bar. In fact, they can't access the address bar. You can block websites (I block nickjr/noggin because they have ads), add your own websites, and completely customize the browser based on what your kid needs. "

-Family friendly, kid safe. love it!-

I believe in old-fashioned things, crafts, living... but I don't believe in excluding technology from our list of ways to live/learn. I believe that knowing how to live/learn BOTH ways will produce the most well rounded, educated, and self proficient children (and selves) possible.Adam+Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06776755195605406502noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639553862971424100.post-84626876532502691212009-11-18T13:50:00.000-08:002009-11-18T13:50:50.140-08:00WWW SPOTLIGHT
SPOTLIGHT: http://www.howdoesshe.com/
Been busy with homeschooling and updating that blog and in turn completely forgot about this one!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">So I had an epiphany today: I'm dated!!! when did this happen?!! I'm only 25! I was thinking about how "cute" my outfit was today and then while i was hauling my crew around from errand to errand I drove by all these young hooligans and their trendy hats and scarves, some of them my age and even older and it hit me! I wouldn't even have picked that out in the stores, let alone wear it... OMgosh! I'm old! not in the age sense of the word, but in every other way I am a 30 or 40 something in a 25 year old body.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Thanks a lot "crew"! I've been so busy the last 5 years taking care of you that somewhere in the mix, I lost "it".

And yet...

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I found myself, I love who I am and who I'm becoming more and more every day with every trial and every trendy outfit I don't buy so I can buy yarn and fabric to craft with, and food and windex to cook for and then subsequently clean up after my little crew. and coutless bags of socks because I'm pretty sure there is a black hole in my washer or dryer that only sucks up socks, and only 1 at a time. It's like I traded my desire for "trends" and always worrying about the who's, what's and where's in for a nice tall glass of wisdom and priorities. You can HAVE your hats and scarves you little hooligans! I wouldn't trade you or go back to my pre-crew life for anythingAdam+Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06776755195605406502noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639553862971424100.post-26582458323014864052009-10-14T23:10:00.000-07:002009-10-14T23:10:53.942-07:00Teaching Kids - The Power of Words
I<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> found this on a great blog.... They had 11 children together. 8 boys and 3 girls. Sarah felt it was her duty to keep her home pleasant so her husband could devote his life to God's word. His studies and prayers often took up to 13 hours a day. Jonathan was shy, moody, & unsocial. Sarah was vibrant, outgoing, and graceful. Here is a quote from an unnamed close friend:

“She had an excellent way of governing her children; she knew how to make them regard and obey her cheerfully. She seldom punished them, and in speaking to them used gentle and pleasant words. When she had occasion to reprove or rebuke, she would do it in a few words, without warmth and noise, and with all calmness and gentleness of mind. In her directions and reproofs of matters of importance, she would address herself to the reason of her children, that they might not only know her inclination and will, but at the same time be convinced of the reasonableness of it. She had need to speak but once and she was obeyed; murmuring and answering again were not known among them. In their manners they were uncommonly respectful to their parents. When their parents came into the room, they all rose instinctively from their seats and never resumed them until their parents were seated; and when either parent was speaking, no matter with whom they had been conversing, they were all immediately silent."
other quotes have been found on her parenting and all testify of her devotion to her husband, children, and God. She nurtured each child's individuality and intelligence, teaching them, loving them, and training them to be responsible to eachother, the community, and God.

In 1900 A. E. Winshup did a study on what happened to her descendants up to the year 1900. He found they included all the above mentioned (in the picture). He also found out
they had written over 135 books and edited eighteen journals and periodicals. Many had entered the ministry. Over 100 were missionaries and others were on mission boards. Winship wrote:
“Many large banks, banking houses, and insurance companies have been directed by them. They have been owners or superintendents of large coal mines… of large iron plants and vast oil interests… and silver mines…. There is scarcely any great American industry that has not had one of this family among its chief promoters….”
Out of 1,400 descendants only 2 were "black sheep" (Marriage To A Difficult Man: The Uncommon Union Of Sarah And Jonathan Edwards, by A. E. Winshup)

IN CONTRAST:
The Jukes family (Jukes & Edwards; Significant Statistics of Two American Families)
Max Jukes was born in about 1720. Very little is known of him but his descendants have managed to constantly keep themselves in the eyes of the public. After a 5 year genealogical study of his ancestors they found about 1,200 people ALL of whom were either criminals, paupers or insane ONLY 20 of the 1,200 ever learned a trade and held a job and 10 of the 20 learned jobs in a State Prison. As of 1900 his descendants had cost the state of New York $1,250,000!!! (that's around $30,000,000 in todays market) <--- This family could have used a Sarah Edwards! The story of Sarah Edwards inspired me. It testifies of what an amazing and heavy responsibility we as mothers have on our children. Our influence is far reached.... for generations to come!!

She is my Hero
Adam+Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06776755195605406502noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639553862971424100.post-7243487899266623502009-10-01T22:51:00.001-07:002009-10-01T22:53:13.753-07:00October 2009 Themes<img style="VISIBILITY: hidden; I also find tons of teaching experiences in day to day life focusing on our current themes. For example this month we have been working on peace in our home. We talk about peace at church. We were watching cartoons and one was about secrets so I brought up trust... etc. our FHE's have that theme divided into 4 weekly lessons.

I'll explain more about our monthly values/joys/FHE in another post. If you're hungry for more I got all these ideas from Linda & Richard Eyre's books. You can also visit their website for more. Their website gives you the FHE themes and broken down lessons for free once you sign up. You have to pay a one time lifetime membership fee of $50 to gain access to all their stuff but it was probably the best money I ever spent. WELL worth it!!!!)

Next I have the girls Aprons. I found that when my kids "dress up" to do something they are that much more into it and that much happier to do what they need. So I made them Aprons for cooking and cleaning.

At the bottom is our "Proud Pig". This is where we post anything and everything the kids are proud of. We use this instead of magnets/fridge because 1. we can't see our fridge in our galley kitchen and 2. the kids love the pig and it looks like it's hugging their work!

THERE YA HAVE IT!

Adam+Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06776755195605406502noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639553862971424100.post-48192896831174117342009-09-23T22:17:00.001-07:002009-09-23T22:18:31.845-07:00Code WordsAdam+Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06776755195605406502noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639553862971424100.post-52012723929051926272009-09-23T13:26:00.000-07:002009-09-23T14:01:32.410-07:00Homeschooling the Book of MormonAs I mentioned in an earlier post, I've decided to homeschool my kids. I've been off and on about this idea since my 1st was born. On one hand, I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to have some peace at home while I send my kids off to school. (did I mention that I'd LOOOOOOVE that?)

But then on the other hand, I hate the public school system. I'm sick over the idea that my children can't pray in school, and that they can't talk about God and aren't taught creationism. This Quote says it in a nutshell:

"Hillary Clinton said it takes a village to raise a child. I've seen the Village. And I don't want it raising my child!"

So at the sacrifice of my "free time" I decided it was the best decision in the long run. I'm actually REALLY excited about it now.
For our Religion part of the curriculum I found these AWESOME books that teach children basic stories in the Book Of Mormon and relate it to real life!!

It even has a page at the end of each story that lists scriptures, hymns, activities, quotes from the General Authorities, and Stories and messages from the Friend (links to past issues) that relate to the story! The pictures are colorful, the stories are told in first person like you are actually meeting Nephi, or Lehi, or Enos, etc. They recommend reading them to kids for FHE but we are going to use this as our curriculum this year!!!! I hope they come out with a bible version!
Adam+Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06776755195605406502noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639553862971424100.post-5000017347477272702009-09-23T13:17:00.001-07:002009-09-23T14:00:29.015-07:00Kid's ChronicalsSince the birth of my first baby I've kept a journal for her where I have been chronicalling her life through my eyes. When I thought of the idea I thought it was such a great original idea! Come to find out that it's not so original after all but I believe I was definitely inspired to begin it. It's just a blank journal and I've only written in it a handful of times in the 5 years she's been on this earth *NOTE TO SELF- write more often!!* But it's one of my greatest treasures. I started out with cheap dollar store books for my girls but that turned out to be a bad idea as they aren't put together very well so for Hudsen I decided to "splurge" and get something a little more time tested. I got a leather bound journal at Walmart for only $7 and will now be buying 2 more and transfering over the info of the other books into the newer nicer ones.
Here's an example of what Hudsen's first page looks like

FYI- No Empty Seats is our Family Motto
I think I'm going to give them their books as a wedding gift when I am officially "done" parenting. Well, at least they won't live under my roof.... hopefully, knock on wood.Adam+Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06776755195605406502noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639553862971424100.post-23406411147004342142009-09-23T12:58:00.000-07:002009-09-23T13:04:51.715-07:00Family Mission StatementAs corny as this may seem, I LOVE it!! Successful companies have mission statements and my family is my job, my company, and we are a TEAM! So, as the kids grow older they will slowly memorize it. Once they turn 8, (they are old enough to know what kind of like they want to lead and yet still young enough to be pure and untainted from too many wordly ideas),they will make up their own personal mission statement and sign it, date it, and put it in their journals.
So without further ado; Here is our Family Mission Statement:

Adam+Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06776755195605406502noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639553862971424100.post-25264274204480577702009-09-23T12:11:00.001-07:002009-10-11T10:42:16.726-07:00I'm back! Here's my planSo.... after a leave of absence to re-do my blog (and for various other time consuming reasons) I'm back! During my "leave" I've implemented a new way of parenting, started going back to school, and decided to start homeschooling my kids! With all these changes I figured a new blog was in need.
STORY: a few months ago Emma's behavior was so bad that I was almost embarrassed at being out with her in public. At my wits end I went to my local thrift store and bought every self help book on parenting I could find. I was bound and determined to "fix" her behavior! The first book I started to read was "A Joyful Mother of Children" by Linda Eyre. It was also the last book I read out of that pile. It was the answer to my prayers!! Long story short: It wasn't her that needed fixing, it was ME! granted her behavior was terrible, but through changing myself, and the way I parent supposedly her behavior would do a total flip flop. and it DID! (Not over night though, this story has been an ongoing process for several months and is still a work in progress. Probably always will be) After reading and highlighting and doggy-ear folding nearly every page in that book, I HAD to buy all their other books (by "they" I mean Linda and Richard Eyre)
Here are just a few of the things I've implemented:

Family Scripture
Family Motto
Family Mission Statement
Code Words
Repentance Bench
Monster Bag
Family Tradtions Book
Proud Pig
etc etc etc.

I'll blog more and explain it more eventually. But for starters I thought I'd show you our Family Scripture and the Blueprint I made to break it down and go along with it:
